We Have An Ethical Responsibility To Our Words …

With much power comes much responsibility… Negativity is so potent, it has profound consequences.  If misused or abused, it can be devastating.  Doing such a thing, whether intentional or without consideration of the damage it inflicts, is inexcusable, insidious, and unethical (and incidentally, in the major world religions, it is also a major sin.)

An ethical line is deeply violated when one misleads, slanders, gossips, publicly embarrasses, spreads rumors, smears, disgraces or dishonors another.  It is not “oops, handslap, I did a bad thing”—it is profoundly base and inflicts enduring damage.  Whether or not it is found to be ultimately accurate, it makes little difference because it is already out there.  This day and age in the world of real-time social media, the damage is resolute.  The bell cannot be un-rung.  One cannot force another to un-hear it, forget it, or ignore it.  The stigma remains and persists.

Negativity is powerful.  Think about it… You probably don’t remember who invented the World Wide Web, but you know well the name behind the orchestration of planes flying into the World Trade Center.   We hardly recall someone deemed a nice person, but call them a crook and wow, you and your peers will remember that person (Incidentally, did Nixon just pop into your head too?).

Stigmatism remains;  It is how we are wired;  it is physiological.  A person can regret and be sorry for perpetrating such a careless act, but this does not erase or reverse the damage- not completely.
